Get started with Ledger — quick 10-minute guide
This page walks you through the essential steps at ledger.com/start: downloading Ledger Live, initializing your Ledger device, creating a PIN and recovery seed, installing blockchain apps, and basic troubleshooting. Follow these instructions carefully to keep your crypto secured.
1. Download Ledger Live
Visit ledger.com/start and choose the Ledger Live download for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux). Always download from this official page to avoid phishing or tampered installers. If checksums or signatures are provided, verify them before installing.
2. Install & launch
Run the installer and open Ledger Live. On first run, select whether you're setting up a new device or restoring an existing one. You'll be prompted to connect your Ledger hardware via USB and follow on-device steps to create a PIN and display your recovery phrase.
3. Write down your recovery phrase
Your recovery phrase (24 words) is the single most important element of wallet recovery. Write it down offline and store it in a secure location (consider a metal backup for fire/water resistance). Never store your seed on a computer or cloud storage.
4. Install apps & add accounts
Use Ledger Live's Manager to install apps for the blockchains you want to use (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). After installing the apps, add accounts in Ledger Live to start receiving and tracking funds.
5. Send & receive securely
Generate receiving addresses in Ledger Live and always verify them on your Ledger device display. When sending, confirm the recipient address, amount, and network fees on the device before approving the transaction.
Troubleshooting & tips
- Device not detected: try another USB cable/port, unlock the device and restart Ledger Live.
- App installation issues: free up space by uninstalling unused apps on the device and retry.
- Missing transactions: resync the account in Ledger Live and verify transaction hashes on a block explorer.
Security checklist
- Only use official ledger.com/start to download Ledger Live.
- Never share your recovery phrase — Ledger will never ask for it.
- Keep Ledger Live, device firmware, and your OS up to date.
- Use a strong, unique PIN on your Ledger device.
